Depuis 1846, Ulysse Nardin est un pionnier de la haute horlogerie suisse. L’histoire d’Ulysse Nardin se confond volontiers avec le monde de la marine.
C’est depuis les prémices du commerce international, à la fin du 19e siècle, qu’Ulysse Nardin se consacre à la fabrication de chronomètres de marine, permettant alors aux commandants de navire marchands de conserver le cap. Si le titre d’« horloger le plus maritime » existait, Ulysse Nardin pourrait légitimement se le voir décerner. Des liens très étroits unissent en effet cette manufacture suisse, née en 1846, à l’univers des océans. Cela a permis à la maison de fournir jusqu’à 50 forces navales différentes (dont l’US Navy). L’ancre qui rehausse le logo de cette enseigne suisse se montre donc parfaitement légitime.
Le calibre UN-118 illustre la volonté d’Ulysse Nardin de devenir autonome vis-à-vis d’ETA en matière de fourniture de mouvements. Ulysse Nardin est toujours une entreprise indépendante et le développement d’un mouvement de manufacture est un investissement considérable pour une structure de cette taille. Further illustrating Ulysse Nardin’s imagination in watch making is the UN-118 caliber, the manufacture’s self-winding base caliber conceived and executed entirely in-house, and now offered in the Marine Chronometer Manufacture. This caliber continues the advancement of Ulysse Nardin’s use of new materials and techniques.
Ce calibre à remontage automatique et entièrement réalisé en interne, démontre s’il le fallait encore, l’esprit pionnier d’Ulysse Nardin en matière de développement de techniques de pointe, associées à l’emploi de nouveaux matériaux toujours plus performants. Le calibre 118 est l’héritier du calibre 66/67 Sonata d’Ulysse Nardin, premier garde-temps conçu et fabriqué en interne.

Ce nouveau mouvement automatique dispose d’une réserve de marche d’environ 60 heures et fait 31,6mm de diamètre. Le mouvement est équipé d’une incroyable réserve de marche de 60 heures avec indicateur, d’un compteur petite seconde aux proportions surdimensionnées et d’un indicateur de date à 6 heures. It boasts Ulysse Nardin’s "quick setting" allowing forward and backward date adjustments.
Le mouvement est décoré de Côtes de Genève et certifié COSC.
UN-118 est doté d’un échappement à ancre fabriqué en DiamonSil, un alliage révolutionnaire de diamant et de silicium développé par Ulysse Nardin en étroite collaboration avec Sigatec. The anchor escapement in Caliber UN-118 is produced using DiamonSil, Ulysse Nardin’s revolutionary alliance of diamond and silicon, and a furthering of its pioneering collaboration with Sigatec.
L’échappement du calibre 118 est né de la collaboration entre Ulysse Nardin et Sigatec à Sion, en Suisse. DIAMonSIL is a revolutionary alliance of silicium and man-made diamond. It is an extremely light but hard material that eliminates friction and removes the need for lubrication of the escapement - the watchmaker’s holy grail. Sigatec is the only company in the world capable of producing high-precision components both in Silicium and DIAMonSIL; a nanotechnology which has taken many years to develop.
L’UN-118 est doté d’un spiral en silicium et d’un échappement ne nécessitant pas de lubrification car il est réalisé dans un alliage de silicium et de diamant de synthèse.

Caliber 118 will be the first member of a family of movements with an in-house-produced and patented DIAMonSIL escapement together with the in-house-produced oscillator adjustable with four screws and fitted with a silicium 1.1.1 hairspring. The movement features a stellar 60-hour power reserve indicator, oversized small seconds register and a date display at 6 o’clock.

The Marine Chronometer Manufacture will be available in a limited edition of 350 pieces in 18-karat rose gold, and an unlimited edition of two-tone titanium case with gold bezel and gold crown, as well as an all stainless-steel/titanium case.

For the Marine Chronometer dial, the aesthetic is a bright, snow white offset by black Roman numerals and bold accents of cherry red, presenting a style that is simultaneously straight-forward and interesting. Its 18-karat rose-gold bevelled case enhances the timepiece’s sophistication.
Enamel is a vitreous material composed of silica, feldspar, kaolin and metal oxides, in the form of crystals. These metal oxides are either naturally occurring or added by master artisan, and they are what give enamels their infinite variety of colors. The mixture is then vitrified at very high temperature.
